CAREER OPPORTUNITY
Santam Commercial Underwriting is seeking a Junior Risk Surveyor to join our Survey Department in Bloemfontein.
WHAT WILL YOU DO?
As a Junior Risk Surveyor, you will assess risk by applying technical knowledge to conduct detailed evaluations. Your role includes performing desktop and physical surveys under the guidance of the Head Surveyor, providing underwriters with insights to ensure accurate risk assessment and underwriting decisions.
Key Responsibilities:
Survey Delivery Requirements
- Conduct surveys within the required service-level agreements (SLAs).
- Achieve agreed productivity levels.
- Provide feedback on queries under the Head Surveyor’s guidance.
- Advise clients, brokers, and internal staff appropriately.
- Ensure compliance with relevant legislation and bylaws.
- Assess operational hazards, production processes, and machinery safety.
- Collaborate with stakeholders (distribution, operations, underwriting, intermediaries) to uphold surveying standards.
Stakeholder Engagement
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure smooth survey execution.
- Support Santam Group companies (MiWay, SEM, Namibia, Specialist Business) with surveying expertise.
- Educate brokers and clients on risk reduction and survey processes.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 1 year of risk surveying, safety, or related experience.
- Matric qualification.
- Fire Service Qualification, Technical Engineering Degree/Diploma, or similar (advantageous).
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Computer literacy (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
- Risk surveying experience, particularly in retention classes and exposures.
- FPA advanced courses, knowledge of risk prevention strategies, high-hazard risks, or thatch construction (advantageous).
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and report-writing abilities.
- Understanding of fire hazards, firefighting, and risk identification.
- Proficiency in MS Office and policy information systems.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently.
- Knowledge of underwriting processes and policy wording.
- Willingness to travel as required.
