WATER QUALITY TECHNICIAN – SOURCE WATER

The Water Quality Technician will be responsible for catchment monitoring and managing the Vaal Dam and Vaal River Barrage Reservoirs to ensure the protection of raw water quality. The role also involves providing support for departmental activities across the entire drinking water supply chain, from catchment to tap.
Minimum Requirements
- Degree (NQF Level 7 or higher) in Natural Sciences, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Hydro-Sciences, or related fields.
- 3-5 years of postgraduate work experience in the water industry.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to conduct fieldwork.
- Experience engaging with multi-sector stakeholders, including municipalities, industries, communities, and forums.
- Knowledge of surface and groundwater systems, water quality legislation, and catchment monitoring and management.
- Experience in water quality monitoring and laboratory data evaluation.
- Understanding of water treatment processes and Water Safety Planning.
- Computer literacy, including statistical analysis skills.
Primary Duties
- Monitor water quality in the Upper Vaal Catchment area, including sampling from rivers, the Vaal Dam, and Vaal Barrage Reservoirs.
- Identify and address risks such as pollution sources, land use changes, and over-abstraction, advocating for corrective actions within legal frameworks.
- Develop and implement sustainable water resource management strategies for the Vaal Dam Catchment.
- Provide scientific and technical expertise on water quality and quantity issues to support Rand Water’s resource management efforts.
- Assist in maintaining the catchment’s online water quality monitoring system.
- Analyze raw water quality data and highlight potential risks to drinking water operations.
- Contribute to source water quality risk assessments and Water Safety Planning.
- Alert the Drinking Water Assurance team to upstream threats that may impact water quality.
- Support catchment-to-tap safety strategies.
Knowledge
- Understanding of water quality and catchment management principles, hydrology, and GIS.
- Knowledge of the drinking water supply chain and treatment processes.
- Familiarity with water-related legislation and regulations.
Skills
- Strong technical report writing and communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to educate stakeholders on water quality assurance requirements.
- Project management and problem-solving abilities.
