Who are we?
Sanlam Group Technology serves as the central hub for digitally enabled technology services, driving business transformation, and delivering group-wide digital and data architecture. We oversee technology platforms, shared services, cybersecurity, and governance, ensuring operational excellence across Sanlam.
What will you do?
Join our newly formed engineering team dedicated to enabling autonomous value creation through data insights and machine learning across the group. You’ll support data scientists, analysts, and data product teams in refining financial and digital offerings to better serve clients and stakeholders.
Our tribe consists of three engineering squads:
- Ingestions Squad: Focused on data collection and security.
- Data Products Empowerment Squad: Streamlining SQL-based transformations.
- Insights & ML Tooling Squad: Accelerating model and insights development.
Candidates will be matched to squads based on skills and team needs during the interview process.
What will make you successful in this role?
Success in 12 months includes:
For the Ingestions Squad:
- Delivering secure, configurable data ingestion platforms within two weeks, ensuring reliability and cost efficiency.
For the Data Products Empowerment Squad:
- Enabling SQL users to schedule and orchestrate complex transformations, eliminating legacy solutions like stored procedures.
For the Insights & ML Tooling Squad:
- Empowering analysts and scientists to deploy impactful models, directly improving business outcomes.
Platform Excellence:
- Implementing observability, performance benchmarks (SLIs/SLOs), and security-by-design principles (RBAC, IAM, encryption).
- Leveraging containerization (Docker) and infrastructure as code (Terraform) for scalable deployments.
Leadership & Growth:
- Driving technology decisions through hands-on experimentation and clear recommendations.
- Fostering continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and coaching within the team.
Qualification:
- Matric.
- National Diploma or bachelor’s degree in IT, Computer Science, Statistics, or related fields (recommended).
Experience:
- 5+ years as a Data Engineer, with 2+ years in modern cloud-based platforms.
- Proven impact and commitment to self-development.
