The incumbent will be responsible for catchment monitoring and management of the Vaal Dam and Vaal River Barrage Reservoirs to ensure the protection of raw water quality. Additionally, the role will provide support services for departmental activities across the entire drinking water supply chain, from catchment to tap.
Minimum Requirements
- Degree (NQF Level 7 or higher) in Natural Sciences, Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, Hydro-Sciences, or related disciplines.
- 3-5 years of postgraduate work experience in the water industry.
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to conduct fieldwork.
- Experience engaging with multi-sector stakeholders, including municipalities, industries, communities, and forums.
- Strong understanding of surface and groundwater systems, water quality, and relevant water resource legislation.
- Knowledge of catchment monitoring and management practices.
- Experience in water quality monitoring and lab data evaluation.
- Familiarity with water treatment processes and Water Safety Planning.
- Computer literacy with statistical analysis skills.
Primary Duties
- Monitor water quality in the Upper Vaal Catchment area by collecting samples from rivers, the Vaal Dam, and Vaal Barrage Reservoirs.
- Identify risks such as pollution sources, land use changes, and over-abstraction, advocating for corrective action within legal frameworks.
- Develop, implement, and maintain a sustainable water resource management strategy for the Vaal Dam Catchment.
- Provide scientific and technical expertise on water quality and quantity issues to support Rand Water’s resource management efforts.
- Assist in maintaining the catchment’s online water quality monitoring system.
- Interpret raw water quality data to identify and escalate risks affecting drinking water operations.
- Contribute to source water quality risk assessments and water safety planning.
- Alert the Drinking Water Assurance team to upstream risks that may impact water quality.
- Support catchment-to-tap water safety strategies.
Knowledge
- Expertise in water quality and catchment management principles, hydrology, and GIS.
- Understanding of the drinking water supply chain and water treatment processes.
- Familiarity with water-related legislation and regulatory requirements.
Skills
- Strong technical report writing and verbal communication skills.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Ability to educate stakeholders on water quality assurance.
- Project management, problem investigation, and resolution capabilities.

- Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and customer-focused.
- Strong interpersonal skills and teamwork ability, with capacity to work independently.
