Senior Compliance Manager (Client and Engagement Acceptance and Continuance)

Primary Purpose of the Job
This role is a key member of the Compliance Team, supporting BDO South Africa in building a resilient and successful business by:

  • Designing and facilitating effective compliance processes with defined roles, enabling exceptional client service.
  • Serving as a trusted advisor to the business on regulations, policies, and procedures while enhancing skills through training.
  • Implementing monitoring processes, delivering value-add reporting, and ensuring remedial action for non-compliance.
  • Promoting a firm-wide culture where everyone contributes to risk mitigation and compliance.

The Compliance Team oversees ISQM1’s “Relevant Ethical Requirements (including Independence)” and “Acceptance and Continuance of Client Relationships and Specific Engagements.” Reporting to the Head of Compliance, the Senior Manager will design, implement, and monitor processes ensuring policy compliance while managing Compliance Practitioners executing these functions.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead design and implementation of policies, processes, and systems for Client and Engagement Acceptance and Continuance.
  • Provide guidance and training to partners and professionals on Ethics, Independence, Conflicts of Interest, and related policies.
  • Oversee operational management and reporting of client/engagement acceptance processes, including reputational checks, risk assessments, and escalations.
  • Manage Compliance Practitioners and report to the Head of Compliance.
  • Collaborate with Independence and Conflicts teams to streamline assessments and clearances.
  • Identify and mitigate risks, assess controls, and design improvements.
  • Conduct compliance reviews and provide risk insights.
  • Work with business teams to facilitate proactive acceptance/re-acceptance processes.
  • Liaise with Digital Solutions to drive automation efficiencies.
  • Engage stakeholders to ensure policy alignment and buy-in.
  • Prepare reports for Governance Bodies and Committees.
  • Drive process enhancements and stakeholder collaboration.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Postgraduate qualification in Internal Audit, External Audit, Finance, Risk Management, or Compliance.

Work Experience

  • Experience in IT system design and implementation.
  • Background in risk, ethics, conflicts, or independence within an audit firm or financial services.
  • Risk Management or Internal Audit experience.
  • Operational process execution expertise.
  • Proficiency in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong English communication skills (written and verbal).

Knowledge

  • Risk and compliance expertise in auditor independence, conflicts, and operational risk.
  • Control design and implementation for risk mitigation.
  • Familiarity with Compliance, Risk Management, or Audit frameworks.
