Legal Advisor (Contract) – HomeChoice
HomeChoice is seeking an experienced admitted attorney with expertise in contract drafting, corporate governance, and consumer law. The ideal candidate is passionate about collaborating with business stakeholders, detail-oriented, and capable of seeing the bigger picture. In this role, you will be responsible for contract drafting, reviewing, and amending, providing proactive legal and business-focused advice, and analyzing legal risks within business operations.
What You Will Love Doing in This Role
- Draft and review contracts, including service and supply agreements, settlement agreements, logistics and transport provider agreements, employment and independent contractor agreements, and operational agreements. Collaborate with stakeholders to assess risks and ensure legal compliance.
- Leverage knowledge of key legislation such as the National Credit Act, Consumer Protection Act, Protection of Personal Information Act, Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act, Financial Intelligence Centre Act, Basic Conditions of Employment Act, Employment Equity Act, and Labour Relations Act.
- Advise on and draft business policies, including conduct, ethics, employment, standard operating procedures, and process documents.
- Provide legal guidance to departments such as procurement, supply chain, human resources, IT, marketing, and operations, ensuring compliance with regulatory standards.
- Stay informed on industry trends, regulatory updates, and legal developments relevant to a credit, insurance, and retail business operating in South Africa, Namibia, Botswana, Lesotho, and Eswatini.
- Prepare legal opinions and memorandums, presenting key insights to business stakeholders.
- Draft and manage legal correspondence, including letters of demand, customer service responses, and regulatory body communications.
- Oversee the litigation portfolio within the legal budget.
- Manage the Intellectual Property portfolio, ensuring timely renewals and new registrations for trademarks and patents.
- Maintain the contract register, tracking expiry dates and coordinating with relevant stakeholders.
- Support ad hoc projects in response to regulatory changes and business needs.
What You’ll Need for This Role
Qualifications & Professional Responsibilities
- LLB degree and admission as an attorney in South Africa, with good standing in the legal profession.
- 2-4 years of post-qualification experience in commercial contracts, labour/employment law, and legal correspondence.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to assess legal matters effectively.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills for clear and professional articulation of legal concepts.
